KENNEWICK, Wash. – A duplex on West 6th Avenue in Kennewick caught fire on Friday, forcing its residents to be displaced.
A press release from the Kennewick Fire Department says crews were called to the home at 6:26 p.m. with reports of a bedroom on fire. One of the residents attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher but could not.
Crews arrived in about three minutes and found heavy smoke coming out of a window in the back of the duplex. Firefighters doused the fire from both outside and inside and extinguished it 11 minutes after the first crews arrived.
As a result, KFD says the home was deemed uninhabitable. The Central and Southeastern Washington Chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the unit’s occupants find a place to stay.
The neighboring unit took no damage from the fire and is still habitable.
Benton PUD also responded and de-energized the property to allow firefighters to safely work.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation, though it appears to have started in the bedroom. No injuries were reported, according to KFD.
Crews from Benton County Fire District 1, the Kennewick Police Department, Richland Fire and Pasco Fire assisted in fighting the fire.
