Desert Oasis High School students publish a book sharing their stories to inspire others

OTHELLO, Wash. – A group of students in Othello, with the help of Wake-Up Nation Founder Isaac Butts, got together to figure out a way to help inspire people by writing a book. The book is called “A Walk in My Shoes”.

The book the students wrote at Desert Oasis High School is just one piece of a program called Culture Boost, according to Butts. The program gives students around the country a way to add value, not only to their schools but to their communities.

Butts said the idea for the book came from the group of students he works with to find a way to let others know they’re not that different from one another. The students share their stories in the book about struggles they’ve overcome to get to where they are today.

“A lot of the students here, they are forgotten,” Butts said. “. They are a lot of the ones people give up on, and for them to be vulnerable enough to share their stories and really the why behind where they’re at and getting everybody to understand this isn’t where I’m going to remain.”

He couldn’t be prouder of the students. Many people don’t want to share their stories and be vulnerable, but these students stepped up to help inspire people by sharing their own experiences.

Freddy Perez, Luis Daniel Martinez, and Gonzalo Faustino are just a few of the many high school students who shared their stories.

“Probably going to motivate them to do greater things in life,” said Perez.

“It was important to let the people know they’re not alone,” Martinez said.

“Honestly, I was really nervous, but it felt like therapy to me,” Faustino said. “Speaking about my story.”

Butts said the book took five months to complete. He said the students wrote and edited the entire book.

“A Walk in My Shoes” is available on Amazon. The students say they couldn’t believe what they accomplished and are proud to be published authors.
