RICHLAND, Wash. – Domestic Violence Services of Benton and Franklin Counties is the only state-funded domestic violence crisis resource center in the Tri-Cities. It offers shelter legal assistance and guidance to victims navigating the aftermath of domestic violence.

This support is crucial for those without a support system. The Richland Police Department and Domestic Violence Services are working to ensure all victims receive the help they need.

“Domestic violence is often a crime of isolation, where an abuser isolates their victim from external resources, family, friends, and anyone who could help.” Said Shannon Snapp, the Program Director for the Crisis Line and Shelter with Domestic Violence Services of Benton and Franklin Counties.

The Richland Police Department has formed the Domestic Violence Resource Team (DVRT) to make help more accessible. The team ensures victims are not forgotten.

“The DVRT team is really focused on following up a couple of days after, just to get pictures of bruising and make sure they don’t need any further resources, whether that is housing, food, shelter, or anything like that,” said Officer Shelby, Richland Police Department.

The team consists of four officers who have undergone specialized training. Officer Shelby shared why he wanted to support victims.

“Before I was out on the road by myself, I went to numerous DV situations. I just think it’s super important to reaffirm with the victim just how important the situation was and make sure they get all the resources they need,” Officer Shelby said. “Sometimes we give them that packet right after it happens, and maybe they forget about it.”
