Deadly crash in Yakima under investigation

YAKIMA, Wash. – A late-night crash at the intersection of S 16th Ave and W Washington Ave in Yakima resulted in one fatality and several injuries according to a release by the Yakima Police Department.

On January 29, 2025, at approximately 11:54 p.m., Yakima Police and Fire responded to a crash involving two cars.

Officer said the driver of a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, traveling southbound on 16th Ave, failed to stop and struck a 2014 Jeep Wrangler that was stopped at the intersection.

The impact pushed both vehicles significantly south of the intersection.

The driver of the Wrangler, a 55-year-old male from the Seattle area, was declared dead at the scene, the release said.

A 30-year-old female passenger from the same area was taken to Multi-Care Memorial Hospital in Yakima with non-life-threatening injuries.

The occupants of the Jeep Grand Cherokee were also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the driver, a 29-year-old male from Toppenish, showed signs of alcohol impairment. He was treated medically and then booked at the Yakima County jail on charges of vehicular homicide and driving on a suspended license.

Speed is also considered a factor in the crash.

The Yakima Police Department Traffic Unit is handling the investigation.
