TRI-CITIES, Wash. – Mid to low-income Washington state electric utility customers can apply to receive a $200 credit in their utility account. The deadline to apply for the credit is Sunday, September 1, 2024.

“It is a great thing that 675,000 households are now eligible and are soon going to get a $200 credit for utility bills,” Washington Governor Jay Inslee said. “That’s something to celebrate.”

According to Washington Governor Jay Inslee, the credit could happen because of Washington’s Climate Commitment Act.

Anyone can see if they qualify for the credit by visiting the Washington Clean Energy Credit website by putting in the name of their utility company and account number. The one-time $200 bill credit goes directly to eligible customer accounts by September 15. Some customers may receive the credit without having to apply.

“Utility costs can be a burden on a household budget,” Executive Director of the Housing Development Consortium Patience Malaba said. “It can be the difference between people being able to stay in their homes as families and individuals. And we know across Washington state, there are many families that are burdened by high energy costs.”

The credit comes after a Department of Commerce 2023 Energy Burden Report showed 250,000 households in Washington spend more than 6% of their income on energy costs.

“The Climate Commitment Act has allowed us today to get people $200 off on utility bills. That’s a big deal for families in this income bracket,” Inslee said.
