KENNEWICK, Wash. – Fire crews are fought a commercial structure fire at GarageTown Storage on North Edison Street in Kennewick on Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Michael Heffner from the Kennewick Fire Department reports that the fire is out.

Kennewick Police Officer Clary says a father and his son were unloading items from their storage unit when the son noticed the fire inside the unit.

A KFD press release says one person was checked for smoke exposure. Heffner says the main unit and its two neighboring units took extensive damage, while two more units on either side of the fire took minor damage.

The fire’s cause is unknown, per Heffner. Southbound traffic on North Edison Street experienced temporary delays for fire response.

KFD says to prevent fires in storage units, avoid storing flammable materials, store items in secure containers, leave space between items, separate potentially hazardous materials and avoid overcrowding.
