KENNEWICK, Wash. – September is just a few days away, but before that August 31 is Overdose awareness day. A day to raise awareness on recovery is helping those going through it, as well as honoring those lost to substance use disorders. A local woman is hosting an event on Saturday to raise awareness.
Nancy Delgado, the event coordinator, tells me she wanted to organize it because she’s been in recovery for 19 years. Delgado wants those struggling with Substance Use to know they’re not alone. Delgado said she has family and friends who’ve used drugs before.
Delgado says she has a desire to help those who have or are battling addiction. Delgado said the event will be held in the Lampson International parking lot with counselors, guest speakers, and resources to help make a difference.
“It’s going to help the community heal and know that there are resources, especially for parents, out there,” Delgado said. “It’s going to help the community to heal and is going to help the community to know that there are resources, especially for parents, out there.”
She says it is dedicated to honoring the lives lost to addiction, trying to break the silence and stigmas around overdose, all while raising awareness on recovery. She said one way of doing that is by holding events like this to unite everyone, showcase strength in unity, and embrace a diverse range of therapeutic approaches within our community. Something she says she had when she was younger.
“When I got clean, my parents didn’t have much information,” Delgado said. “They didn’t know where or how to look for help. I got in trouble with the law, and they helped me detox my parents, detox me. Ever since then, I got clean. I’ve been clean for 19 years.”
The event kicks off at one o’clock in the Lampson parking lot with a moment of silence, guest speakers throughout the day, food, raffles, and many different resources. It follows with a silent walk across the cable bridge.
Delgado says she could only have done this with help from numerous sponsors. Knowing they want to help the community with this problem means the world to her.
