KENNEWICK, Wash.- Maira Ramon is a dual language resource teacher at Fuerza Elementary School. She was awarded September’s Classroom Makeover from WaFd Bank.
Ms. Ramon is a first-year teacher. She works with 38 students throughout her day for small group instruction, helping students catch up to meet their goals.
“I want my kids to all feel welcome when they come in,” said Ramon. “My biggest goal is just for them to feel like they’re included.”
Dora Johns, the Principal at Fuerza Elementary School taught Ms. Ramon in third, fourth and fifth grade. Ms. Ramon said Johns inspired her to become a teacher.
“I’ve always wanted to be the type of teacher that she was to me growing up,” said Ms. Ramon. Johns said she is excited to mentor Ms. Ramon and watch her blossom as she continues her teaching career.
Ms. Ramon plans to use the award from WaFd Bank to buy more toys for her Calming Corner. “As a first year teacher, I have to buy a lot of this stuff so this will be really helpful,” said Ms. Ramon.
The Calming Corner is a place for kids to go when they get overwhelmed and need a break. Ms. Ramon provides breathing techniques and fidget toys to allow kids a space to calm down.
“As a first year teacher, anything helps and this is really something that will benefit my students.”
