RICHLAND, Wash.- Tawnya Ostrer is a librarian at Carmichael Middle School. She was awarded December’s Classroom Makeover from WaFd Bank.

Mrs. Ostrer was nominated by her parateacher Maira Molina who said she embraced the challenge of transforming a much needed library for Carmichael students. “I mean every piece or corner that you see here that’s all her,” said Mrs. Molina.

After working at different schools throughout the district, this is Mrs. Ostrer’s first year at Carmichael. When she arrived she wanted the space to feel warm and welcoming rather than monotone. With her own budget and determination, she made it happen.

“We hung flannel on the wall because it’s cheaper than wallpaper and we bought chairs off Craigslist because it’s cheaper than new,” said Ostrer.

Mrs. Molina agreed the new decor makes the library a safe space, attracting kids all day. “The kids are here before school, after school and during lunch,” said Mrs. Molina. “They really do love it.”

WaFd Bank believes in keeping our community strong through supporting students and teachers. Each month, WaFd and NonStop Local will choose a teacher from nominations by the community and present a check to their classroom. You can nominate a deserving teacher here.
