RICHLAND, Wash. – The City of Richland announced its selection for its new Chief of Police on Wednesday after an extensive nationwide search for candidates.
Martin Pilcher, who currently serves as the Chief of Police for Woodburn, OR, was the selection out of three finalists.
Pilcher currently oversees 40 officers, three community service officers and 7.5 professional staff members and has been in the position since 2021. Prior to that, he was the city’s Deputy Chief from 2018.
Pilcher also has experience as an internal affairs investigator for the Portland Police Bureau and has spent most of his career with the Elk Grove Police Department in Elk Grove, CA.
“I am honored and excited to be selected to serve as the Chief of Police for Richland,” said Pilcher. “My goal is to work collaboratively with the community, the department, and other city agencies to ensure that Richland remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone. I look forward to meeting with residents and working together to address our community’s needs.”
Before Pilcher can become the Chief of Police, he must undergo a background investigation to ensure his suitability for the role. It is expected to be completed within a month, then he will take the place of Interim Chief Craig Meidl and assume the Chief of Police duties.
“I would like to thank the other candidates who went through the interview process with us,” said City Manager Jon Amundson. “In addition, I extend my appreciation to all those who participated in the public candidate forum, the multiple interview panels, and the staff who assisted with the logistics of this important process.”
