SELAH, Wash. – A 17-year-old Selah resident was injured after being struck by a car near Selah High School on the night of Oct. 18.
According to a Washington State Patrol Press Memo, a driver traveling southbound on North 1st Street near Wernex Loop Road hit the pedestrian while they were crossing the street outside of the crosswalk at approximately 7:11 p.m.
WSP Trooper Trevor Downey says the teen was looking down at her phone as she crossed the street. An investigation found she was at fault and did not cross at a crosswalk.
The 17-year-old was transported to a nearby hospital. The driver was uninjured.
Charges were pending against the 17-year-old, however Downey says they will be dropped. In the State of Washington, pedestrians not using a crosswalk must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles on the roadway.
