Celebrate Black History Month with local and regional events

TRI-CITIES, Wash.-February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the history, contributions and legacy of African Americans in the United States and several events are planned around the region all month long.

Tri-Cities:

Feb. 8: How “I Have a Dream” Almost Didn’t Happen. Speaker Arthur Broady will give the informative and entertaining background of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s famous speech at 7 p.m. in the Doris Roberts Gallery at the Richland Public Library. Feb. 15: “We Are Also in Bondage Here: Black Women in the Washington Civil Rights Movement.” Historian Quin’Nita Cobbins-Modica will give a lecture at 7 p.m. at the Union Branch of the Mid-Columbia Library.Feb. 20: Screening of the film “Shaft” at 6:30 p.m. in the Doris Roberts Gallery at the Richland Library.

Walla Walla:

Feb. 8: Visiting Writers Reading Series featuring poet Derrick Austin at 7 p.m. at Whitman University.Feb. 29: Early Learners Storytime. A morning of story, songs and a craft for children at 10 a.m. at the Walla Walla Public Library.

Yakima:

Feb. 29: Celebrating Black History Month: Annual Soul Food Luncheon and Showcase at OIC of Washington.

Kittitas County:

Feb. 6-9: The Civil Rights Exhibit at the CWU Diversity and Equity Center explores Black history and the role of the Civil Rights movement.Feb. 5: CWU Monday Movie Madness: “The Blackening” at the SURC Theatre.
