CDC: Salmonella outbreak linked to dry dog food

ATLANTA, GA.-The Centers for Disease Control issued a pet food safety alert after a salmonella outbreak linked to dry dog food.

The outbreak has resulted in seven cases of illness, mostly in infants, across seven states.

According to the CDC, people can get sick from touching recalled dog food, dog bowls that contained the food or touching the poop or saliva of dogs that ate the food.

The brands affected by the recall are Mid America Pet Food with best by dates of Oct. 31, 2024, Victor Hi-Pro Plus dog food with a best by date of Apr. 30, 2024 and Victor brand Super Premium Dog Food, Select Beef Meal and Brown Rice Formula with a best by date of Jun. 12, 2024.

The CDC recommends throwing the affected food out immediately and contacting your veterinarian if your dog shows any symptoms of illness.

Symptoms of Salmonella according to the CDC:

Most people infected experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, with symptoms usually starting between six hours and six days after infection.Most people will recover without treatment in a few days.Younger children may require medical attention or hospitalization.

Symptom of salmonella in pets:

Most pets don’t get sick from salmonella, however, they do spread the disease through their poop and saliva.If your pet exhibits any signs of sickness consult your veterinarian.
