KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. — With plummeting winter temperatures the number of people unintentionally putting themselves at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning rises. According to the American Lung Association, more than 50,000 people visit emergency rooms because of accidental CO poisoning every year.

Generator use in Kittitas County has been a concern for emergency responders like Kittitas County Fire Protection District 6. In a Facebook post, KCFPD said generator placement is putting people at risk, especially when generators are placed near house vents or under windows.

To avoid facing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning that can lead to feeling ill or even death, follow the generator tips:

Place generators approximately 18 inches from your housePlace generators approximately 5 feet from doors, windows or ventsMake sure your generator is serviced routinely as per its manualKeep an eye out for symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning like headaches, dizziness, vomiting and confusion
