Car fires caused 13 deaths, over $160 million in damages last year in Washington

OLYMPIA, Wash – Vehicle fires are a common, but deadly issue in Washington State.

According to the National Fire Protection Association vehicle fires are 4.5 times more deadly than residential fires.

In 2023, there were 13 deaths and more than $167 million in content and property loss in Washington State. Last year, car fires were the fourth leading type of fire with 3,593 incidents reported.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office provides the following safety tips for preventing and responding to vehicle fires:

Drive safely and obey the rules of the road.Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for routine vehicle maintenance.

In the event a vehicle fire occurs:

Quickly and safely pull the vehicle to the side of the road.Turn off the engine.Have all passengers safely exit the vehicle.Find a safe location to regroup at least 100 feet away from the vehicle.Call 911.Do not return to the vehicle.
