OLYMPIA, Wash.-A bill that would limit noncompetition contracts for workers in Washington passed the state Senate by a 29-20 vote.
Under Senate Bill 5935, sponsored by Sen. Derek Stanford (D-Bothell), workers in Washington would be provided a range of protections against employer-imposed noncompetition agreements.
“Noncompete clauses in contracts hurt workers and stifle competition,” said Sen. Stanford. “Workers should have the freedom to seek or accept a new job without undue interference.”
According to a Senate Democrats press release on the bill, consumers would also benefit by being able to follow their favorite car mechanic, doctor, or other service provider who moves to a new location.
SB 5935 would expand legislation passed in 2019 that stopped most noncompete contracts for workers making less than $100,000.
The Washington state House will now consider the bill.
