A bakery has created a unique Christmas display – by recreating the nativity with loaves of bread.
The display was created by the team at Hobbs House Bakery and was thought up by staff member Amanda Jane and shop manager Hilary.
Amanda, who has worked at the bakery in Nailsworth in Gloucestershire for nearly 20 years, has created several window scenes during her career.
The team used their organic wild white sourdough to craft the characters of Mary, Joseph, the shepherd and the kings – with baby Jesus played by a baguette resting inside of a rye loaf.
A star was also added, crafted by Baz in the bakery.
“It takes two to three days to dry the bread enough to be able to cut and varnish it,” said Amanda.
“This year I did it as simply as possible – no carving or adding limbs. I just cut one end off flat for them to stand up on, and then varnished them twice so they don’t shrink or mould.
“Then we added eyes and simple clothes.
“Wild white sourdough loaves were the perfect shape. Baby Jesus is part of a baguette, and the crib a rye loaf. The star is a bakery creation.
“A nativity scene was perfect, as it’s the Christmas story – the bread of life made from bread!”
Shop manager Hilary added: “I had the idea and planned it then Amanda executed the idea.
“Baz did a great job on the Christmas star which we really appreciated.
“We wanted something traditional and simple and I think we got it right!”
