WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Walla Walla Public Schools announced on Thursday that several outdoor athletic and activity facility projects passed in the Outdoor Capital Levy are ahead of schedule.
WWPS says that many of the improvements will be completed in summer 2024. Hellas Construction, a leading sports field construction company, is partnered with the district to quickly complete the projects.
“Hellas’ Matrix Helix Turf fields with all-natural infills, and their EPIQ Track surface represent the safest, fastest and most durable systems in the industry,” said Superintendent Dr. Wade Smith. “Additionally, the state-of-the-art, low-spill/low-glare LED Ephesus field lighting is considered to be the most neighbor-friendly sports lighting system on the market.”
A groundbreaking ceremony at the Walla Walla High School campus is scheduled for May 30. Eight new tennis courts, a JROTC Raider Obstacle Course, artificial turf fields and field lights are set to be complete by early fall.
The Klicker Track and Wa-Hi is also being resurfaced and an area for safer track throwing events will be built north of the existing track.
Pioneer Middle School’s new track and the resurfacing of the Garrison Middle School track is set to be complete by September. Murr Sports Park is also getting new lights which will be finished before spring.
Wa-Hi’s football team will play at Borleske Stadium once more before transitioning to the Wa-Hi campus in fall 2025, a year earlier than previously projected.
“Once we complete the bulk of the field, court and track improvements, we will begin transitioning into the second phase of the projects, focusing on bleachers, restrooms and other site improvements,” said Smith. “Our improved construction phasing will have us wrapping up all of the voter-approved projects by fall of 2025, one full school year ahead of original schedule.”
