WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Walla Walla District Army Corps of Engineers is planning to remove the causeway to Bateman Island, sparking concerns from the public.

According to the final feasibility report for the project, the cost to remove the causeway is estimated at $13 million. While the Corps of Engineers has acknowledged public feedback about losing land access to Bateman Island, no alternative has been proposed to replace or add a new way for land access.

Future access to Bateman Island will be available only to boaters, swimmers, and those willing to float over.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has mentioned there might be plans to enhance the Richland shoreline near Bateman Island, but no further details have been specified.
