KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Kennewick Fire Department are investigating a house fire that started in the laundry room Sunday afternoon.

KFD firefighters said they found smoke pouring out of the home and people evacuated when they arrived to the house on South Conway Place. Crews had the fire under control within 10 minutes of being dispatched.

First responders treated one person for smoke inhalation but there were no further injuries.

Clothes dryers caused 4% of home structure fires from 2014 through 2018, according to a 2020 report published by the National Fire Protection Association.

To prevent dryer fires, KFD urges the public to follow simple safety tips:

Have your dryer installed by a professional.Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.Clean the lint after each dryer cycle.Make sure to check and clean the back of the dryer for lint.Check the venting system behind the dryer to make sure it’s not broken, crushed or obstructed.Make sure the outdoor vent opens when the dryer is running.
