PASCO, Wash. – This is the season of eating and getting together with family and friends, but Thanksgiving meals can get stressful for those who want to keep the nutrition and weight loss goals.
Joe Thornton, the owner of Total Impact Sports, helps people with their goals of losing weight and eating better. Thornton said with Thanksgiving this Thursday, feel free to eat.
“It is challenging,” said Thornton. “People love to eat, and then they sit on the couch. I would recommend eating a little bit more carbs so therefore you have a lot of energy to go into the gym and work a little bit harder.”
Thornton said practicing portion control is a good first step. He said it’s hard to manage during the holiday because you love so many different foods.
“Just try not to eat to the point where you just can’t get up anymore,” he said. “I tell people all the time to manage it where you can eat a little bit here and then take a break. Then go back again; that way, you keep the metabolism moving.”
According to Thornton, drinking a glass of water before your meal will help you not overeat because there will already be a little bit in your stomach.
Thornton also said to do a little exercise before you eat.
Some exercises he recommends are squats and pushups and he said to do two to three sets of each and stay active on Thanksgiving day.
“Whether you do bodyweight exercises, which is really great, or take the family on a walk around the neighborhood in between,” Thornton said.
Thornton said to listen to your body, and it will tell you when you ate enough.
Thornton said to eat until you are satisfied, not until you can’t move.
