How the Kennewick Police Foundation gives back

KENNEWICK, Wash.- The KPD Foundation supports the community by supporting public safety. As a nonprofit, the Foundation works separate from the Kennewick Police Department.

Jim Zimmerman, President of the Kennewick Police Foundation, said the foundation was formed back in 2009 to help fund community programs and strengthen the relationship between police and the community. One of these community projects is KPD’s annual Shop with a Cop day.

This year, 36 kids were identified through school counselors as recipients of a $150 gift certificate to shop for their family.

“We were able to outfit 36 kids and their families with no only gifts, but also a holiday meal basket from Walmart,” said Zimmerman.

One of the most impactful initiatives KPDF works on year-round is their Community Care Fund. Started in 2015, the fund gives officers the opportunity to immediately assist a citizen in need. Tyler Scott, Vice President of Foundation Strategies, said these funds help officers give back and make an impact.

“It ultimately gives the department the resources they need to bridge that gap with the community,” said Scott.

The Community Care Fund is used at the discretion of the officer and completed with a foundation credit card. The officers then provide the receipt and a description of why the funds were spent. These are all reviewed by a police commander and the foundation board.

Kennewick Police Foundation’s contributions are made possible by donors.

“We receive donations from both public and private entities as well as individuals in the community that just find it as a great opportunity to support our police department,” said Zimmerman.
