Is there a release date for Squid Game Season 2?
Yes! Netflix has confirmed that Season 2 will premiere on December 26, 2024, with a letter from creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Who has been cast in Squid Game Season 2?
Lee Jung-Jae returns to lead the new season as Seong Gi-Hun a.k.a. Player 456, with Lee Byeong-Heon as Hwang In-ho, Wi Ha-Joon as Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the recruiter. New to the cast are Kang Ha-Neul, Yim Si-Wan, Park Sung-Hoon, Yang Dong-Geun, Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Won Ji-an, and Cheoul-su.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jo Yu-ri and Yim Si-wan, whose character is a crypto bro, are exes competing in the game together. Expect to see other players with a history this season, too.
Is there a trailer for Squid Game Season 2?
Yes. Netflix has now revealed a teaser trailer for the new season of the survival drama, and it shows that not only will Gi-Hun return to the competition, but he’ll try to stop them before things get too bloody. From the first look, it appears some of the games and settings will be the same as we saw in Season 1 (like “Red Light, Green Light”). And Gi-Hun will work to keep his fellow players alive, encouraging them to vote to leave, despite their “one more game, one more game” chants.
What will Squid Game Season 2 be about?
The logline for the new season is as follows: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 456 billion won.”
In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang Dong-hyuk said the theme of the season is “taking sides” and revealed that the players of the game will be required to make a choice to stay or end the games after every game. “I wanted to tell a story about how the different choices we make create conflicts among us and to open up a conversation about whether there is a way to move toward a direction where we can overcome these divisions…. I wanted to pose the question: Is the majority always right?”

A teaser for the new season (below) shows him returning to his sweatsuit for the games and reclaiming his original player number of 456. (The teaser also shows the uniforms of players 380, 390, 388, 007, 044, 120, 124, 125, 149, 222, and 246.)
About Gi-hun’s return, the creator explained, “I was thinking about G-hun’s unfinished quest and about The Matrix where Neo is given the option of the blue or red pill. He could have just lived happily on, but he chooses to take the pill where he becomes aware of the Matrix and struggles to get away from it.” He also revealed that the budget for Season 2 is much expanded to allow his creative vision to come to life.
Additionally, three stars from the show debunked and perhaps tacitly confirmed some fan theories in this video.
Will there be a Squid Game Season 3?
Yes! When announcing the premiere date for Season 3, Netflix and Squid Game‘s creator also revealed that there’ll be a third and final season of the series. Read more about that right here.
