A dog trainer and animal welfare advocate, Colleen Page is credited for founding the holiday in 2004.
The holiday, observed every year on August 26, celebrates the diversity of dog breeds and draws attention to the number of dogs needing rescue every year.
From companionship, protection of homes and families and service to the disabled, dogs continue to be an integral part of the nation.
