KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Kennewick Police Department needs 11 officers to keep our community safe. Sergeant Michael Rosane with KPD says the position is available after the police academy. Applicants are looking to become police officers. Sgt. Rosane says the department tests every month through national safety testing.
If you pass the testing, KPD gets a list of people. Rosane says they go out in the community to recruit, working alongside WSU Tri-Cities and other organizations and attending community events to spread the word. Rosane says keeping the community safe is why he joined.
“I was in the Army before joining the Kennewick Police Department, so I kind of had that commitment to community service already,” said Sgt. Rosane. “When I got out, it just felt like a natural transition. I’m from Kennewick, so I came back, applied, and here I am today.”

The Kennewick Police Department’s hiring process to get into the police academy consists of several steps.
Sign up for the Law Enforcement Test and Physical Abilities Test (PAT) at www.publicsafetytesting.com.Get ranked on the civil service list. If you pass the Law Enforcement Test and the PAT, you will be ranked on the civil service list. A score of 70% is required on each exam component to qualify as a passing score.Return your Personal History Statement. Complete your integrity interview.Command Staff interview.Pass a Polygraph test.Go through a medical and psychological evaluation.
The Physical Abilities Test (PAT) consists of 20 push-ups in 90 seconds, a two-minute break before doing 25 sit-ups in 90 seconds, and a five-minute break before doing 35 squat thrusts in 2 minutes.
Sgt. Rosane said that once accepted, you go to the police academy for five months. From there, you go into KPD’s field training program for four months. He said the good news is that there is an academy right here in the Tri-Cities. He says having the academy here locally helps with recruiting because people might have families and want to stay close to home.
