Benton Clean Air Agency issues air quality alert

BENTON COUNTY, Wash. – Due to a heavy amount of wildfire smoke in Benton County, the Benton Clean Air Agency has issued an air quality alert for the county.

The Agency says the Air Quality Index (AQI) is between “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” and “Unhealthy” on the western side of the county. The AQI is “Moderate” in the Tri-Cities, however forecast changes could create higher smoke levels.

Pollutants in smoke can cause burning eyes, runny noses, aggravate heart and lung diseases and other health issues. The Agency recommends limiting outdoor activities and keeping children indoors.

The Agency also recommends closing all windows if possible, using the “recirculation” switch on air conditioners and obtaining N95 or N100 masks.

For current air quality information, visit the Agency’s website. Find more tips on reducing smoke exposure on the Department of Health’s website.
