SUNNYSIDE, Wash.-Lower Yakima Valley residents received a visit from the Attorney General’s office to discuss problems seen in their communities.
Community members presented to representatives from the Civil Rights, Environmental Protection and Policy divisions. Issues discussed ranged from the lack of clean water in Mabton, discrimination in schools and workers’ rights.
Assistant Attorney Generals also discusses the differences in their divisions and what each can do for Washingtonians.
“I think a lot of us know that they defend the state agencies,” says ELLA Executive Director Maria Fernandez. “But we would like to know what they do in terms of working with residents and concerns around Washington state, particularly for us to be here in the Valley.”
Representatives explained the AG’s office can’t provide legal counsel or represent an individual but can steer someone in the right direction.
Some residents who expressed concerns were told to meet with an Assistant AG after the forum to discuss their options.
