YAKIMA, Wash.-The City of Yakima is encouraging residents to conserve water ahead of a dry summer and statewide drought conditions.
City officials are asking residents to use water wisely to manage the City’s domestic and irrigation systems throughout the summer, according to a press release on the conservation efforts.
“As we manage our water supply for both our domestic and irrigation systems throughout the summer months, we ask all of our customers to use our water wisely and help us conserve this valuable resource,” said Water/Irrigation Manager Mike Shane.
Yakima provides domestic water service for about 72,000 residents main source is the surface water supply from the Naches River through the City’s Water Treatment Plant, according to the City.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation began prorationing water supplies for junior water right holders in the Yakima River Basin due to drought conditions on May 21, with prorationing currently set at 54 percent.
Yakima also has four deep groundwater wells that serve as a secondary water supply for the city.
