YAKIMA, Wash.-Yakima Valley Libraries will celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) on Saturday, April 27 at the Sunnyside and Yakima Central Libraries.
“Our Día events are a celebration of children and books, two of the things we here at Yakima Valley Libraries are passionate about,” said Madison Gailus, Youth Services Coordinator.
Día, a day set aside to focus on the well-being of children and the importance of childhood, has been celebrated on April 30 in Mexico and other Latin American countries for almost one hundred years.
Today Día focuses on literacy, children, families, multiculturalism, multilingualism, and the importance of reading together, according to a Yakima Libraries press release.
Yakima Valley Libraries Día events will feature storytimes, book giveaways, crafts, scavenger hunts and more.
YVL Día events:
Sunnyside Library: Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.Yakima Central Library: Saturday, April 27 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
According to YVL, all other branches will have drop-in crafts and treat bags for kids during regular business hours on April 26 and 27.
Friday, April 26: Buena, Granger, Harrah, Mabton, Tieton, Toppenish and Zillah.Saturday, April 27: Moxee, Naches, Selah, Terrace Heights, Wapato and West Valley.
“These events provide an opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate our diversity while nurturing an appreciation for stories and literacy among our youth,” said Gailus. “Everyone should be able to find themselves represented and valued in the stories they encounter.”
