ELLENSBURG, Wash.-The City of Ellensburg has been awarded funding from the Department of Commerce for a renewable energy project for the city’s electric utility.

The $350,000 awarded to Ellensburg is one of 14 grants awarded by Commerce as part of an $8.1 million investment from its Clean Energy Fund to expand renewable energy sources and strengthen Washington’s grid, according to a Commerce press release on the grants.

“Commerce is dedicated to the state’s climate commitment goals, and to ensuring that those benefits are experienced across the state for all communities,” said Commerce Director Mike Fong.

The announced funding will support the planning and development of new energy projects in communities across the state. A full list of projects is available through the Department of Commerce.

According to Commerce, Ellensburg will use the funding for a smart grid solution for renewable energy deployment for the city’s electric utility.

“These projects, which are primarily to organizations that haven’t received funding in the past, will result in a cleaner, more resilient and more just energy system while at the same time create construction, operations and maintenance jobs,” said Director Fong.
