KENNEWICK, Wash. – A residential structure fire led to the death of a dog on Saturday morning, January 13.

According to a press release from the Kennewick Fire Department, crews responded to reports of a residential structure fire on the 2600 block of W. 7th Ave. in Kennewick at 1:54 a.m.

When crews arrived on scene, they immediately worked to extinguish the fire and searched the home to ensure no other occupants were inside.

According to Kennewick FD, three adults were inside the house when the fire started and were alerted to the fire after detecting an odd odor. A fire was discovered in the kitchen area of the home and all occupants self-evacuated before fire crews arrived.

A dog perished due to smoke inhalation as a result from the fire. There were no injuries to firefighters.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

According to Kennewick Fire Chief Chad Michael, there were no working smoke alarms inside the home. KFD urges community members to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly three out of five fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

The NFPA recommends installing smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside separate sleeping areas and on every level of one’s home. It also recommends testing alarms at least once a month, and using interconnected smoke alarms so all alarms sound when one is triggered.
