KENNEWICK, Wash. – You’ve probably been to plenty of farmer’s markets around the Tri-Cities, but what about a market made for kids?
The Hub hosted a market and showed why this market isn’t just child’s play.
Max Santoy and Macy Uribe aren’t your average jewelry makers. They are still in elementary school and said they were selling key chains, bracelets and rings.
The two girls are making jewelry to raise money for sporting events they are a part of.
“Soccer and Basketball, said Santoy.
“Competitive Cheerleading and Basketball,” said Uribe.
The Hub was packed with young business owners selling things like jewelry, baked goods, candy, tee shirts and stuffed animals.
The girls’ parents Teresa Santoy and Rita Uribe said events like this one are important learning opportunities for kids in our area.
“They’ve got to work for things that they want,” said Uribe. “Not everything is handed to them on a silver platter, so they’ve actually really enjoyed themselves, making their own money and they get excited about it now.”
Max says they’ve sold many things over the summer but, this experience is a little different and scary for them because it involves talking to new people in person. Which is something they’ve never had to do before.”
“Only like fundraisers online,” said Max.
Max and Macy’s parents said they are proud of their daughters for their work ethic and for taking this step.
“The fact that they’re willing to spend their Sunday when there’s plenty of other things they could be doing,” said Uribe. “Selling and mingling and just really taking pride in earning their own money to be able to put towards things they really enjoy.”
The event ran from 10 to 3 and if you missed out on today’s Kids Market don’t worry. Uribe tells me she expects there will be another one soon.
When we find out when the next Kids Market is we’ll be sure to update you.
