OLYMPIA, Wash.-The Department of Commerce has awarded over $35 million in grants to communities across Washington, including some in the Central and Southeastern parts of the state, for battery back-up projects.
The $35.4 million in announced funding will go to local, state, and tribal governments and non-profits to plan and install solar and battery back-up power systems at community buildings according to a Commerce press release on the grants.
The back-up systems will provide power during emergency power outages at schools, shelters, healthcare environments and other community venues.
“Power outages impact everyone differently – some of our most vulnerable community members face significant risks when the power goes out,” said Commerce Director Mike Fong.
Outside of emergency situations the battery back-up systems will produce clean electricity to save on energy costs according to Commerce.
Some of the grants awarded will also help communities complete feasibility studies and plan and develop future solar with backup projects.
“We are pleased to be able to help communities get ready to complete solar and battery storage projects in the future,” said Commerce Assistance Director Michael Furze.

Regional Counties receiving solar power with back-up system grants:
Kittitas County: Kittitas County Fire District #1 will get $27,871 for solar back-up at Station 13.Yakima County: Union Gap School District will receive $1,393,690 for its solar plus storage project.Yakima County: Granger School District will be receiving $1,491,568 for a solar plus storage project.Franklin County: $1,500,000 for a solar power project at the Hapo Center.
