OLYMPIA, Wash.-Two horses from Grant and Benton Counties have tested positive for West Nile Virus.
The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) confirmed the positive tests in the horses that were not vaccinated or were under-vaccinated for the disease.
According to the WSDA both horses are recovering.
Washington State Veterinarian Dr. Amber Itle recommends spring as the best time to vaccinate horses against West Nile virus or obtain an annual booster shot.
“We have seen a decline in Washington state in recent years of this virus in horses, and we believe that is due to horse owners taking action before the season with vaccination,” said Dr. Itle.
Any horse owner can request the West Nile vaccine from their Veterinarian.
Tips from the WSDA for limiting horse exposure to mosquitos:
Reduce or eliminate stagnant or standing water.Stable horse during peak mosquito hours from dusk to dawn.Use equine approved mosquito repellant.Use fans inside stalls and barns to keep air moving.Avoid using incandescent bulbs in barns at night.
