GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) – A former undersheriff in northern Montana is accused of stealing firearms when he left his post for another job.
The Great Falls Tribune reports former Cascade County Undersheriff John Stevens was arrested Thursday on a felony charge of theft for allegedly taking county owned firearms when he left the office in January 2018.
Former Sheriff Bob Edwards says he never authorized Stevens to take the weapons and was unaware that he had done so.
Investigators say Stevens turned in one of the firearms following an interview in December and told them he traded two others for an all-terrain vehicle for personal use.
A phone number for Stevens could not be located Thursday night.
