10-year-old boy dead after Christmas crash that hospitalized multiple people

UMATILLA, Ore. — A 10-year-old boy died due to injuries he received in a three-car crash that sent nine people, including five children, to the hospital on Christmas Day.

According to the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened on Umatilla River Road outside of Hermiston when the 23-year-old driver of a 2008 Honda Accord headed southbound hit the 24-year-old driver of a Honda Civic headed northbound. A third car driven by a 47-year-old driver also hit the Honda Civic while trying to avoid the first car.

Deputies said the Honda Accord had two passengers, a 3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy, both sons of the driver. All three were injured and taken to a local hospital.

The Honda Civic had four passengers, including the 17-month-old daughter of the driver. The driver’s sister, her sister’s 6-year-old daughter and her 10-year-old son were also in the car. All of them were injured significantly, according to UCSO.

The 47-year-old driver of the third car was interviews at the scene and released with no injuries.

The 10-year-old boy was taken to Legacy Randall’s Hospital for Children in Portland, Ore. where he died on Dec. 30, 2023.

The crash is still under investigation. Deputies said they suspect the driver of the Honda Accord to have been driving impaired.
